¡SALUD! Receives American Medical Student Association’s First Film Prize

March 8, Washington, DC—The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) bestowed its first film award to ¡Salud! at the organization’s national convention here.  AMSA President Jay Bhatt presented the award to ¡Salud! Executive Producer Dr. Peter Bourne at a special screening of the film.  Bhatt told the audience of 250 medical students attending the ¡Salud!  showing: “We present this first ever award to you and ¡Salud!  in recognition of the film’s important inspirational impact on those working toward social justice and healthcare for all."

“We’re especially pleased to accept this award,” said Dr. Bourne, “since it comes from all of you who are the future of medicine in our country.  That’s why,” he told the students, “it’s so heartening to see your decision to dedicate this year’s convention to the theme of Health Care Justice.  On behalf of the filmmakers, we’re honored to be a small part of your efforts.”

A roster of internationally recognized figures addressed AMSA’s five-day 57th Annual Convention, including keynotes from Representative John Lewis (D-Ga.), noted author and global health activist Dr. Paul Farmer, JUSTICE SPEAKS Founder Dr. Gloria WilderBrathwaite, Drs. Barbara Ross-Lee and Jack Geiger, and CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

AMSA, the USA’s largest independent medical student association, has launched several initiatives addressing health disparities in the USA and the world, inviting partners to join in pursuit of “The Dream of a Healthy Society”.  For further information, see www.amsa.org.
